Biography

During her training, Rene performed with the National Youth Theatre and worked with Battersea Arts Centre (BAC) Young People’s Theatre and the Time Out Critics’ Choice–winning BAC Development Theatre Company. As part of BAC’s resident Development Theatre Company, she helped create Battersea Square, the UK’s first live soap opera which was also an award-winning production.

She collaborated with leading theatre-makers and companies including Frantic Assembly, Ridiculusmus, Spymonkey, and artists such as Toby Jones, as well as directors including Steven Canny (Complicite), Cal McCrystal, Paul King (Paddington & Willy Wonka films) and Tom Morris.(War Horse, National Theatre and Bristol Old Vic).

Having graduated and facing barriers to gain employment in the creative industry, she veered towards the public sector whilst still actively being involved in creative works/projects. Having been a child in care when younger, she wanted to make a difference, leading on major education projects and the last 5 years, worked as an Education Advocate for with over 200 Bristol Children in Care. She also took the lead on securing an agreement that any Bristol Child in Care, can go with a friend or carer to see theatre shows at The Bristol Old Vic for free.

She has produced and managed large-scale creative projects, including a successful dance and music programme with Lambeth Music Service, Rambert Dance Company and students from Lambeth Academy. She also worked on a programme with Grammy Award–winning Ladysmith Black Mambazo and dancers from the Royal Ballet. She also worked as a Producer on the award winning Stance Podcast, including a Takeover of the Tate Modern for their Lates Series as well as a panellist about Child Refugees.

Since relocating to Bristol in 2020, Rene has performed with Bristol Old Vic’s Adult Company, appearing in ensemble productions including the Big Community Show with a cast of over 100 – of Orpheus and Eurydice, in which she played Eurydice’s mother to strong critical response. “there is also an authentic performance by Rene Katiisa as Eurydice’s mother”

She also performed in  What have you Lost? at The Cube, directed by Riana Monieth, and appeared in the short film Suong, which has received multiple award nominations and wins.

After a difficult 5 years, she ended her a 25-year career in the public sector having been encouraged by her son saying "mummy, I need you to be happy and do acting or do something creative that you like"! True Story!

Rene made the decision to fully return to her creative practice. In February, this year, she was one of five artists selected for a residency exploring Decolonising Disability in the Arts at Bristol Old Vic, contributing significantly to the published report and advocating for trauma-informed and accessible industry practice for disabled artists.

This was shortly followed by being selected as one of 15 global majority artists from over 200 applicants to take part in the Culture Biz Incubator Programme run by Black South West Network and funded by Arts Council England and WECA.

This culminated in a showcase at We The Curious, where Rene presented a one-woman autobiographical show following her journey from childhood in Uganda, growing on on a council estate in South London to motherhood in Bristol. She hopes to finalise scripting and tour Bristol, the South West, London, Edinburgh and Kampala International Theatre Festival in 2026.

In May 2025, Rene was also selected and featured as part of the Diverse Arts Network (DAN) Mini Diaspora Festival at Watershed, Bristol, where she presented a series of audio monologues exploring themes of home, displacement and belonging. These works later became the foundation for Sugarcane and Concrete.
